Dynamic HTML: Is it a dream come true?
Article Abstract:
Dynamic HTML (DHTML) adds Cascading Style Sheets and better integration of scripting languages to HTML. Cascading Style Sheets are used to define fonts, margins, line spacing and other document characteristics: type size can be specified by point size, line heights can be set in pixels, and 'x' and 'y' coordinates can be controlled for layering elements. DHTML allows JavaScript or Microsoft's VBScript to be used to provide dynamic control of page elements and attributes. Layering allows text to appear and disappear, type to grow and shrink, and images to move from position to position on a page to create animations without having to reload the page. DHTML is more complicated to use than HTML, and it is also more complicated than using JavaScript. Among the tools becoming available to faciliate use of DHTML are Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Microsoft's FrontPage 98, although the DHTML features that package supports may not work well in Netscape's Navigator browser.

Visual Page 1.0
Article Abstract:
Symantec's Visual Page 1.0 Web-design tool software is a very good, mid-range product and is especially impressive for an initial version. For instance, Visual Page is already superior to Claris Home Page and Adobe PageMill. However, it does not support some of the more sophisticated HTML features, such as dynamic HTML or Cascading Style Sheets, which are supported by Microsoft's FrontPage 98 and Macromedia's Dreamweaver. On the other hand, Visual Page's price of $99.95 for the Macintosh version and $79.95 for Windows version combined with its easy-to-use interface may be appealing to some users. Among the product's strong points are its support for frames, including the NOFRAMES tag, its support for tables, its built-in HTML editor, and its sophisticated support for Java applets and features that require plug-ins. Some of its short-comings include a relative lack of sophisticated site management features and disappointing documentation.

Ulead GIF Animator 1.5/GIFmation 2.1
Article Abstract:
Ulead Systems' $29.95 Ulead GIF Animator 1.5 and BoxTop Software's $49 GIFmation 2.1 GIF animation software packages make it easy to add movement to a Web page. Ulead GIF Animator is packed with features and uses an intuitive interface. The program's Optimization Wizard keeps file size as small as possible, and active banners can be created, but while text can be added, the text animation controls are not as good as those in Alchemy MindWorks' GIF Construction Set. GIFmation is well integrated with Adobe Photoshop, allowing each layer of a Photoshop file to be imported as a separate frame, and several animations can be created simultaneously. The program alerts users when a selected option is not supported by a specified browser, and GIFmation's support for onion-skinning makes drawing easier, although the program's drawing tool is limited.
