Europe's digital mindscapes

Article Abstract:

Several new developments in Europe might make the advances and wonders of the digital and multimedia age more accessible to people. Germany's Center for Art and media Technology in Karlsruhe is sponsoring an interactive installation called the Legible City, in which people pedal a stationary bike into a virtual city. The Center plans further adventures in funding installations whereby people can interact with new technologies.

Jim Ludtke and his digital diorama

Article Abstract:

Jim Ludtke started as a print illustrator in the mid-1970s. He started to work on the Apple Macintosh computer in 1984 and created an interactive diagram of the brain in 1987. He worked in New York, NY, until 1991 producing music videos. He started designing CD-ROM artwork in 1991. These digital works are also interactive, but more artistic than educational. His latest project is called 'Bad Day on the Midway'.

Imagery in the networked age

Article Abstract:

Simultaneity is the image of 1997. Television, the telephone and digital media are all about instant availability. Advertisements in various ages signify important images about these periods. Speed was important in the 1940s. Postcards, magazines and transportation images implied the importance of speed to everyday life.
