How standards became a dirty word
Article Abstract:
Graphic designers abhor the concept of standards, yet each designer has his own standards. Designers prefer the contradictory, unstable, complex, provisional, and also continuous change. Some of the unvoiced assumptions about quality included originality and innovation, rather than decorous good taste. However, good design is likely to go unnoticed amongst the plethora of bad design, and standards and self criticism could serve to raise consciousness about quality.

Manifesto for a new millenium
Article Abstract:
The Canadian anti-advertising publication "Adbusters" and its editor Kalle Lasn have issued a challenge to the design industry by reprinting a 1964 essay asking designers to concentrate on useful social communication rather than commercial ventures. The essay, "First Things First," by designer Ken Garland is being reprinted in other journals. The essay calls for designers to be more involved with environmental and social concerns.
