I Publish 2.0

Article Abstract:

Design Intelligence's I Publish 2.0 desktop publishing software provides a timesaving, structured approach to business documents such as reports, brochures, newsletters and catalogs. The drawback of the software, however, is its 'structure', which could be too confining to publishing professionals. The majority of page layout applications place text and graphics on a page and then mold them into shape using formatting and style commands. With I Publish, the structure of the document is defined first, including the functional relationships among all of its parts--headlines, subheads, call-outs, captions, graphics and other elements. Once order has been created, the user's content is made to conform to it. In this approach, each element on the page is a container, referred to as an intelligent component, that automatically formats its content.

Two font standards: what the Apple-Microsoft agreement will mean for you

Article Abstract:

Apple and Microsoft's decision to enter the page description language market and compete against Adobe Systems Inc's very popular Postscript should ensure improved font technologies and printing devices at a lower cost. Apple has agreed to supply its 'Royal' font format to Microsoft for inclusion into Microsoft's OS/2 operating system for the PS/2 computer. Apple plans to use the new font format to include on-demand font scaling for printers and displays in the Macintosh's System 7.0. While the results of the Apple-Microsoft agreement will probably not be apparent until the later half of 1990, industry support is promising. At the same time, type libraries from such companies as Linotype, Monotype and Bitstream will be available in Apple's 'Royal' format.
