Illustrate your point: clip art rises above its reputation

Article Abstract:

The quality of images provided in clip art packages continues to improve, and several sources are now available for royalty-free illustrations. Ad Graphics' $179 Retro Ad Art features commercial art from the 1930s, -40s and -50s, including more than 1,300 ad layouts, more than 300 company logos and about 250 miscellaneous images. Aridi Computer Graphics' 11 volumes of design elements are clear and colorful, and most are in editable EPS and CDR vector formats. Art Parts' eight volumes place the images into such categories as Anthropomorphics, Body Parts, Botanical, Road Stuff and Son of Business. Art Soup's three volumes have only 252 images, but they are high-quality art saved in the five resolutions of the Kodak Photo CD format. Artville sells more than 125 illustration titles featuring more than 10,000 high-resultion TIFF and JPEG images from several different artists. Bird Design Studios' four collections cost $99.99 each and feature 50 images apiece in Adobe Illustrator EPS files. Also described are EyeWire's Circa:Art and ArtRoom collections, Master Series Illustration Library's 14 titles, and Visual Language's nine volumes.

3-D at a clip; add a new dimension to your publication or presentation; affordable 3-D clip models for Macs and DOS PCs, combined with inexpensive imaging programs, create an endless variety of original art

Article Abstract:

MacroMind*Paracomp's $129 SwivelArt, Ray Dream's $99 JAG, Silicon Beach Software's $199 Gallery Effects and NEC Technologies' $399 Clip Art 3-D three-dimensional (3-D) model clip art libraries are examined. Both Clip Art 3-D and Swivel Art are easy to operate; ready-made 3-D objects can be copied or pasted into a scene, positioned at will and exported from the menu. PICT and EPS files are then available to place in a program like PageMaker, for editing in Canvas or FreeHand and presented in Persuasion or Hollywood. JAG solves the problem of jaggies by opening an image, anti-aliasing it and closing the image, and JAG does it 10 seconds faster, and with higher quality, than SwivelArt. Gallery Effects works as a desk accessory, as a stand-alone application or as a series of plug-in filters, and it lets users set several variables, such as stroke length and faithfulness to detail.

Clips on the Move: spice up your presentations with motion-clip packages

Article Abstract:

A variety of digitized motion clips from theatrical films, industrial and educational films, commercials and cartoons are being introduced for Apple's QuickTime and Microsoft's Video for Windows, as is shown by several briefly described products. The clips usually come in Macintosh format on CD-ROM and enable the addition of audio and motion to presentations, desktop publishing designs and other desktop productions. Most of the clips, though, can only be used in private or in-house applications and not in commercial products or applications that may be seen by the general public. The example products are Sound Source Unlimited's Star Wars VisualClips, Voyager's You Can't Get There From Here and To New Horizons, San Francisco Canyon Co's Action and Leptonic Systems' Toon-Time collection of Betty Boop cartoons.
