In-house slidemaking: an expose: getting good resolutions from desktop film recorders
Article Abstract:
Previously only service bureaus had the money and expertise to consider film recorders, but smaller firms now can purchase a system for prices between $2,000 and $15,000. Film recorders produce high quality slides at prices lower than service bureaus, and also provide enhanced security and control over the slide creation procedure. Users intent on high resolution slide product abilities are advised to consider digital film recorders. Factors to consider when evaluating the recorders include resolution, speed, color and software. Products now on the market include Polaroid's CI-3000 film recorder, American Liquid Light's Still Light and Verite film recorders for Macintosh computers and Mirus's FilmPrinter. Lasergraphic's LFR and LFR Plus fall in the above-$10,000 range; both have coprocessor boards that plug into either a Macintosh or an IBM or compatible AT microcomputer.

Monitor menaces: ten tips for protecting yourself
Article Abstract:
Health hazards associated with regular computer use are becoming more widely recognized, although indisputable hard evidence associating low-level radiation from video display terminals (VDTs) with specific health problems has not yet been established. Ten tips from experts in the field are presented, including maintaining a distance of between 24 and 28 inches from a monitor's screen; maintaining a safe distance from the back of another worker's monitor, implementing a monitor shield, taking extra precautions during pregnancy, using an adjustable chair, sitting with feet flat on the floor, using stretching exercises at regular intervals to maintain a range of motion, getting an annual eye exam, avoiding working in front of a window, and watching glare from fluorescent lighting.

New resolutions: Wyse's latest monitor for IBM PCs and compatibles
Article Abstract:
Wyse Technology's monochrome WY-700 monitor for IBM PCs and compatibles can display 1,280-by-800 pixels and four shades of gray on its 15-inch screen. The $999 unit has an easy-to-install card and can run IBM CGA and monochrome programs as well as programs that have software drivers for the higher resolution, including AutoCAD, PC Paintbrush, and the Microsoft Windows and GEM operating environments. The image quality is excellent, smoothing the displays of lower resolution programs and allowing far more information to be displayed in multi-windowed GEM and Windows applications. Problems include a lack of printer ports, a somewhat elongated aspect ratio in the display, and the white-on-black characters used in the display's default mode.
