London's older Turks: Carroll, Dempsey & Thirkell

Article Abstract:

Carroll, Dempsey and Thirkell (CDT), a top graphic arts firm, believes graphic design is a 24-hour business. Founded in 1980 by Ken Carroll and Mike Dempsey, CDT employs 15 to 20 staff members and mandates that its employees work a solid working day, with no overtime and no weekends. The third partner, Nick Thirkell, added his name to the firm in 1986. The company has earned three out of 19 Design and Art Direction 'Golds' in its 12-year history. CDT has also won awards for its editorial and book designs since 1986. Photographs of CDT design work are included.

Michel Bouvet

Article Abstract:

French graphic designer Michel Bouvet shaped Maison de Culture's visual identity during his 12 years with the firm, but throughout his employment he maintained a Paris studio and worked for other clients. Now he works independently, primarily as a theatrical poster designer, and he represents 15-20 clients. His success has resulted from his poster-design theories and his attitudes toward his partners.

Ghurka advertising campaign

Article Abstract:

The first image used in an advertising campaign for Ghurka leather goods and accessories was very successful, and the entire campaign was designed around it. Artist Monte Dolack painted the image, which depicts a pair of travelers, with Ghurka luggage, waiting to board a seaplane moored in a Tahitian lagoon. The campaign's development is discussed from both technical and artistic viewpoints.
