NetObjects Fusion
Article Abstract:
NetObjects' $695 NetObjects Fusion offers comprehensive Web site design functionality without requiring any knowledge of HTML. Fusion supports unlimited drag-and-drop assembly of text, graphics, audio, video, and Shockwave, Java, or ActiveX applets. It also supports access to SQL databases using ODBC drivers. Fusion provides pixel-level specificity in positioning objects, using elaborate, invisible tables. The application includes templates for online publishing, catalogs, calendaring, and simple commerce forms. Fusion makes image map creation simple, and automatically generates a navigation buttons to reflect current site layout. A site map feature allows pages to be moved using drag and drop. Sites can also be automatically generated in alternative formats for text-only, grayscale, and low-bandwidth clients. Fusion also includes a preview feature, and includes built-in FTP capabilities for publishing the site on a remote server.

Texture 1.0 (FutureTense's Web authoring software) (Software Review)(Evaluation)
Article Abstract:
FutureTense's $495 Texture Web authoring software offers a suite of tools with features similar to those of desktop publishing software. The application supports drag and drop placement of objects, and uses a text placement system that closely mirrors the functionality of page layout applications, but does not offer the direct 'what you see is what you get' functionality of other Web authoring packages. Texture offers the ability to format text in any font by encrypting font outlines for the visitor's viewer. Since Texture pages are all held together with Java, a Java-enabled Texture viewer can automatically be sent to every Web site visitor. Downloading the viewer can be time-consuming, but ensures consistent site layout on all Windows clients. Similar results can be obtained using HTML or other HTML authoring software such as NetObjects Fusion, but Texture provides an interesting solution.

Microsoft FrontPage 97
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's $149 FrontPage 97 Web-site design software offers Web designers a collection of useful tools and a helpful interface at a low cost. The Web publishing tools include an array of Web graphics, prepared scripts, a Web-page editor and Microsoft Image Composer. The application also effectively integrates site management and page authoring via a flowchart-oriented hierarchy that acts as the user's primary interface. The chart portrays connections amongst various pages at a site. FrontPage's object positioning capabilities are the only area requiring improvement. The existing system limits the placement of graphics to generic HTML absolutes relative to text.
