No desktop is an island
Article Abstract:
Publish! undertakes to assemble the magazine's production system, assuming the role of systems integrator. Linking microcomputers and software packages into a networked system, various problems are encountered and reported. Publish! uses the following: TOPS (transcendental operating system) from Centram Systems West; Inbox from Think Technologies and Intermail from Internet are both discussed for electronic mail; Glue from Solutions Inc is used to view Macintosh files; and Maclink from Dataviz helps to translate files between Macintoshes and PC's. Building the network is described, and incompatibility problems are detailed, notably involving electronic mail. Publish! plans, in Part 2, to report experiences with using this network, as well as experiences with other networks that link Macs and IBM PC compatibles.

Font Reserve 1.02
Article Abstract:
DiamondSoft's $119.95 Font Reserve 1.02 font management software makes handling large numbers of fonts easy because it automatically builds and manages a font database for the user. Once the fonts are registered, or dragged into the program's browser, Font Reserve checks them, corrects minor defects, separates out the corrupted ones and groups the remainder into family units. Fonts can be protected against operating system contamination by being transferred, or copied, into a 'vault.' Font Reserve can group fonts according to ten preset filters reflecting characteristics such as transitional faces, humanist sans serifs, and so on. Users can also create customized filters based on information added to the font's database entry, such as a font's 'owner,' which lets users separate custom from stock fonts.

Tools of the trade: (tools to facilitate desktop typography)(includes a related article on URW's HZ-Program for composing paragraphs and lines to eliminate loose and tight lines)
Article Abstract:
A variety of plug-in software modules are available for DTP programs to facilitate the composition of text that has a quality appearance. Most desktop-produced type lacks a quality appearance because page composition programs have inefficient typesetting tools that are not controlled well. One example is the line-by-line hyphenation and justification routines in the Macintosh System 7.5 operating system that do not account for the appearance of the preceding or succeeding lines. The plug-in extensions described handle vertical justification in a delineated space, improve hyphenation and control horizontal spacing and kerning. Other extensions and standalone programs facilitate the control, modification and use of type styles. A wish list for additional typographic capabilities is described.
