QX-tools
Article Abstract:
Extensis Corp's QX-Tools is a set of 10 integrated XTensions that will improve productivity when using the Macintosh-based QuarkXPress desktop publishing software. The tools address QuarkXPress' structural limitations for a much lower price than other XTension applications. QX-Tools provides a cost-effective method of zooming in on small type, working with objects in layers, and defining character-based style sheets. Multiple layers can be created in page layouts. The software adds 10 customizable toolbars to the XPress interface. The software's image retouching capabilities are disappointing because images are viewed at XPress' low-resolution PICT preview, which is not suitable for onscreen viewing. Other tools enable style sheets to be assigned to individual characters, resize multiple objects by percentage or unit of measure, print discontinuous pages, or increase viewing magnification to 900 percent. QX-Tools is priced at $149.

PhotoFix 2.8.8
Article Abstract:
Microspot USA Inc's PhotoFix 2.8.8 aims for the lower end of the image editing software market and though its price of $295 is about a third of the competition, its features leave something to be desired. The program is not for professionals but rather amateurs, and its RAM requirements of only 5MB causes compromises such as an oversimplified way of dealing with color; although users can work with 24-bit RGB images, there is no way of dealing with Pantone or CMYK color models. PhotoFix's interface is similar to that of PhotoShop and up to 32 levels of undo are possible. Overall, though, the lack of any robustness makes this low-priced program probably not worth it when compared to full-featured programs like Photoshop.

Extensis BeyondPress 4.0
Article Abstract:
An evaluation is presented of Extensis' $499.95, BeyondPress 4.0. The software is used to convert XPress documents into Web pages that look similar and work with most browsers as well as add such Web functionality as links. The program works well when converting individual stories and art into HTML pages from XPress documents and then using them for source material in a stand-alone Web authoring program. However, the software is not a one-click solution for changing existing XPress layouts into corresponding Web flawless and effortlessly. One of the biggest problems is overlapping items. Downloading the BeyondPress 4.0 demo from the company's Web site is recommended prior to purchasing the software.
