Refining Philip Johnson's way

Article Abstract:

Architect Philip Johnson constructed the first of several dwellings in New Canaan, CT, on five acres of land he purchased in 1946, which has grown to encompass a complex of 40 acres by 1996. Glass House, the primary structure of Johnson's design efforts, comprises 1,800 sq ft and is constructed with large sheets of glass. Other buildings that Johnson has added to his original architectural creation at the site include the Guest House in 1953, the Pavilion in 1962, and the Monsta, a gatehouse, completed in 1995.

Sir Terence: a knight's revival

Article Abstract:

Sir Terence Conran is the owner of CD Partnership of London, England, an interior design and architectural practice. In addition, Conran operates eight restaurants and the Conran Shops in Tokyo, Paris, and London. Conran believes that the future of small design businesses will be in a market for individual items. He also feels that unfamiliarity with business practices is one of the major weaknesses of designers.

The architecture of emotion

Article Abstract:

Mexico's Ricardo Legorreta uses color to evoke emotion in his designs for office buildings and the grounds that surround them. Legorreta's projects include biotechnology labs for the Chiron Corp., outside of San Francisco, CA; a City of Arts in the center of Mexico City; and the remodeling of the Mexico City zoo. In addition, he has collaborated on many projects with landscape architect Peter Walker.
