Extensis Preflight Pro 2.0/Flightcheck 3.3

Article Abstract:

Extensis' $399 Preflight Pro 2.0 and Markzware Software's $399 FlightCheck 3.3 are powerful utilities that discover problems in files before output and can scan graphics, fonts and layouts in minutes. Preflight Pro works as a QuarkXPress plug-in or with other creator applications, which must be running in order to scan a file. Version 2.0 is much improved over its predecessor and has new automation features that let the user establish a set of 'watch' folders on a preflighting workstation. It generates a high-resolution PDF version of the preflighted file using a licensed version of Adobe Acrobat Distiller 3.0. FlightCheck has an improved user interface, but still lacks customizable reports and can scan only one document at a time. Both programs have companion collection tools and rely on user-defined settings to determine what file elements are problematic.

Electrifier Pro

Article Abstract:

Electrifier's $595 Electrifier Pro combines the content of other applications and adds interactive capabilities. The application leverages the power of Apple's QuickTime 3.0 and supports most types of QuickTime media, which includes a wide variety of media types. Actors and sprites can be added to a stage and animated through the use of timelines. All media layers are saved as a QuickTime movie. This is a useful feature because QuickTime is a standard plug-in for the major Web browsers. Bandwidth concerns are minimized by streaming the playback. The software also offers transitions, fades and animations, although slow-in and slow-out controls are lacking.
