The flexible option

Article Abstract:

Flexographic printing (flexo) is largely favored by package designers over gravure. Flexo's advantages include lower overall cost, and due to its rubber or photopolymer printing plates, compatibility with a variety of surfaces. It also keeps waste to a minimum. Flexo presses are compatible with the environmentally correct water-based inks. Flexo can be used for a broad range of packaging needs, accommodating a variety of sizes and post-production handling. Dot gain, however, makes flexo inappropriate for stochastic color and thus it is incompatible with HiFi color. Dot gains result in imaging problems. Other disadvantages include high cost for short runs, inconsistency from press to press and among printers.
