Growing pains

Article Abstract:

Adobe InDesign introduces some powerful new features and some frustrating bugs. The typography is flexible and sharp, and the extensible architecture will allow Adobe to update the software easily in the future. However, inconsistent shortcuts and stubborn page layout problems make InDesign a cumbersome program to use in actual production. Although Adobe has made leaps of progress in graphics rendering and extensibility with InDesign, the clumsiness of the interface may undermine it's powerful infrastructure until Adobe can make some changes.

Well, what are your needs?

Article Abstract:

Adobe InDesign forces users to take the bad with the good. It boasts powerful illustration capabilities, but doesn't serve as a replacement for serious illustration packages like CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator. One of the handiest layout features is cascading master pages, which allow designers to change page attributes from a single template. InDesign performs somewhat poorly in production due to long file opening times and unnecessarily complex configuration dialogs. Advertising and magazine designers will find InDesign's features convenient, but book designers and compositors will probably be frustrated by some of its shortcomings. Adobe InDesign lists for $739.

InDesign preview

Article Abstract:

The beta version of Adobe InDesign lacks many of the features of more mature desktop publishing or page layout programs. InDesign does not have a Story Editor and cannot run text around nonrectangular images. The product's tools, including optical kerning, optical margin alignment and multiline justification, make InDesign one of the best DTP applications priced under $1,000. Other features include multiple views of the document, editable keyboard shortcuts, full-resolution display of bitmapped and vector images. The software tracks all changes, so very little is lost if the system crashes. This application offers a valuable improvement in page layout technology.
