What ever happened to French design?

Article Abstract:

French design has gone underground - the designers are not communicating, and there are few manufacturers in France who support design. In the 1970s, Philippe Starck found small manufacturers in Italy and Spain who would produce his designs. Only later, when he became known, would French manufacturers pay him generous fees. French furniture manufacturers must support the Valorisation de l'Innovation dans l'Ameublement, an organization from which Starck and other designers receive minimal support.
