A little local difficulty

Article Abstract:

A research project looking into the quality of local transport plans devised by the local councils in Basildon, Essex, England, and Crawley Sussex, England, concluded the plans lacked sufficient information on how their proposals would be introduced. The UK government had requested all local authorities should provide local transport plans but only gave them six months to prepare. The plans from Crawley and Basildon stated they wanted to spend more money on public transport and reduce pollution by cutting the use of cars but failed to indicate how they would achieve their aims.

Firm decisions

Article Abstract:

The conversion of surveying partnership companies into limited liability companies (incorporation) is becoming more popular due to rising costs particularly of insurance and costs attributed to claims of negligence. There are several disadvantages of incorporation such as difficulties that arise when partners wish to sell their shares and public scrutiny of the company's actions and finances. Incorporation will bring new managerial expertise to a company and reduce personal costs of the partners for indemnity insurance. Incorporation should not only for financial reasons.

Taking action on blacklisting

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry's list of prohibited materials is unreliable and inaccurate, says construction law specialist Christopher Holwell of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Garston, England. Construction contracts compiled from an assumed, inadequate list of hazardous substances are derived from previous project work. The BRE has the technical expertise to compile a relevant and up-to-date source of prohibited materials. Its expert knowledge should be used to set industry-wide standards.
