There is extensive housing development in High Wycombe, England, which benefits from being located close to three M40 motorway junctions. Residential development is now taking place on sites previously set aside for employment. In Aylesbury, England, there has been a range of commercial and leisure property development. Cairn Property Holdings and Easter Group are completing their Britannia Walk retail scheme, while CTP's 5,100 sq mt leisure scheme, which includes a six-screen ABC multiplex, opened at Exchange Street before Christmas 1999.

The commercial element of Tarmac's Sovereign Harbour residential complex in Eastbourne, England, known as The Waterfront, will open in Mar 1999. This will consist of 3,716 sq mt of restaurants, offices and shops. Rents for restaurants will be around 188 pounds sterling per sq mt, with offices at 129 pounds sterling and retail at 161 pounds sterling. There have been few positive developments in relation to office accommodation in Eastbourne, but the retail property sector has been boosted by the decision by TJ Hughes to take a lease assignment from House of Fraser on the former A&N department store.

Demand for office space in Cheltenham, Glouchestershire, England, is fairly buoyant. Demand for retail outlets is also good, with premium rents reaching 160 pounds sterling per sq ft. The Cheltenham authorities are reexamining their local plan in order to meet the UK government's requirements of finding space for about 7,000 new homes. Land for residential development is rising in cost, with a site suitable for 100,000 sq ft of housing being sold for more than 2 million pounds sterling. Local agents point out many of the new residential dwellings in Cheltenham are built on brownfield sites.
