Diversify and conquer?

Article Abstract:

The experiences of P and O and Trafalgar House, both of which have seen a fall in profits, indicate that companies which have their origins in property could face difficulties if they diversify into too many other areas. Conglomerates have been a popular concept over recent decades, with property companies moving into areas including banking and construction. However, companies which move into operations which are totally unrelated to their existing activities could face severe problems.

The British Labour party's proposals to maintain current levels of income tax and public spending if it wins the election give some indication of the impact of its policies on the property market. The Labour-led Commission on Public Policy and British Business report Promoting Prosperity advocates a lower capital gains tax for over ten-year-old assets. Other aspects of the report are discussed.
