Fashion on parade

Article Abstract:

A study into retail turnover, in the UK, found spending on comparision goods, such as footwear, fashion items and electrical goods, in shopping centres had risen to 17.2 billion pounds sterling in 1997 from 16.7 billion pounds sterling. It has been estimated the share of comparison goods sales for shopping centres will stay around 25%-30% by 2005. Spending on retail goods during 1997 has been predicted to reach 161.3 billion pounds sterling. The growth in large shopping centres, such as Trafford Park, is likely to increase their sales as many shops chose to move into the new developments.

Santa's coming to town

Article Abstract:

UK shopping centres invest heavily in Christmas displays to attract Christmas shoppers from miles around. Many centers spend over a third of their marketing budget on Christmas displays and advertising schemes. They tend to hire display equipment from specialist organisations so that they can have new and appealing designs each year. They are particularly interested in technologically advanced equipment such as displays which are switched on by infra-red sensors.

Collaborating on a bestseller: The arrival of US bookseller Borders has triggered a race for superstore bookshops

Article Abstract:

Tim Waterstone is linking with Dillons to repurchase the Waterstone's chain he sold to WH Smith in 1989. The deal will challenge the US chains Borders and Barnes & Noble which are keen to expand in the UK. The book retail sector is healthy but the way in which books are being sold is leading to failures amongst smaller independent booksellers. Barnes & Noble may move into the British market by purchasing chains, instead of opening its own outlets.
