Article Abstract:

Town and city shopping centres have for many years been regarded in Germany as superior to large regional shopping centres. However, this attitude could change following the opening of P and O and Stadium Developments' 70,000 sq mt CentrO regional shopping centre at Oberhausen, Germany. This offers a wide range of facilities, including free parking, a restaurant and a leisure boulevard, and will be further boosted when the German headquarters of the Coca-Cola organisation relocates there shortly. However, some observers are expressing doubts about the centre's potential, highlighting the fact that more than 30 units remain unlet.

Welcome end to retail cathedrals

Article Abstract:

It will not be possible to construct any more extremely large out-of-town retail developments in the UK, but the negative and positive aspects of these developments will remain influential for many years to come. The national and local politicians and planners who were responsible for approving such developments in the 1980s failed to realize that they would have a negative impact on the economies of towns and cities and that they would affect retailing over a very large area. Extremely large shopping malls brought some short-term gains, but their long-term negative effects are already beginning to be felt.

Article Abstract:

Some new types of businesses are looking for space in out of town retail developments, such as the travel industry. United Kingdom government policy encouraging retail development in town centres has had an effect on the amount of retail space built on out of town developments. The amount of newly developed space has fallen from 4.5 million sq ft in 1997, developed on retail parks larger than 50,000 sq ft, to 3 million sq ft in 1998. It is likely demand for space will cause the rents to rise and some companies are planning to make their shops smaller to reduce costs.
