Government slated over mortgage subsidy cuts
Article Abstract:
Building societies and charities have been among organisations which have criticised the changes planned by the UK government to income support payments for unemploymed home-owners. Under the new regime, which is set to come into effect in Oct 1995, new borrowers would receive no government help for nine months after becoming unemployed, with existing borrowers receiving no help for two months. Building societies warn that this could lead to higher mortgage rates for borrowers, while charities fear a rise in repossession rates.
