James Bay power project hits a dam
Article Abstract:
The development of the James Bay hydroelectric project in Quebec has been stalled due to opposition of the local Cree Indian group and adverse environmental effects of the project. The infrastructure development, as well as dam construction, has ground to a halt because the Indians have filed a petition to stop Hydro-Quebec's project, as it is disrupting their social structure and culture. Other environmental disruptions have been cited and have contributed to the setback in the development. Electric utilities, on the other hand, say that the economic benefits outweigh the environmental and social losses.
