Article Abstract:

It is forecast that home shopping via the Internet could reach 7.25 billion pounds sterling and account for 5% of total U.K. shopping expenditure. Retailers already making use of the Internet include Innovations, Sainsbury's and Tesco. Sainsbury's has an on-line service for ordering flowers and wine, but it forecasts that consumers will continue to shop at supermarkets, particularly to buy fresh products. However, if home shopping becomes more popular, it could reduce the value of most retail companies and cause their share prices to fall dramatically, with manufacturers bypassing retailers altogether.

Getting to the route of the problem

Article Abstract:

Pedestrian access is finally receiving priority attention in the central area of Birmingham, England, with almost 7 million pounds sterling already spent to pedestrianise some areas around the inner ring road. The environmental status of the city would be improved by building an underground road through the centre, which would also allow existing carriageways to be returned to local road use. A relief toll road is planned between Cannock and Sutton Coldfield to reduce inner-city congestion, although construction could not commence before 1998 and is still subject to approval.

Robbing Peter, but not paying Paul. (the road-building programme)

Article Abstract:

The government is aiming to increase private-sector investment in road building via the private finance initiative, based on the design, build, finance and operate principle. This was announced at the same time as the decision to cut a large number of trunk-road projects, including a final link in a ring road around Harrogate and Knarsborough. Some believe that this could hinder attempts to encourage inward investors to the area.
