Magnetic Mercosur spurs South America's 21st century surge
Article Abstract:
Mercosur has proven to be the single biggest force for positive economic change in South America. Conceived in the late 1980s as a free trade union between Argentina and Brazil, Mercosur now also includes Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile, with plans to welcome Bolivia and Venezuela. It has become a formidable trading bloc boasting 255 million consumers and some $1 trillion in gross domestic product (GDP). Free trade is driving growth at such a rapid pace that many analysts predict that South America will become second in the world in terms of GDP growth by the year 2000.
