The chief of Infineon Systems, Ulrich Schumacher, is of the opinion that in the near future from 2003 there would probably be only five distinct chipmakers along with a few foundries with their individual fabrication plants. Moreover, there seems to be a tendency for the companies to merge due to the increased costs and the growing need for capital.
