Article Abstract:
Some 5 billion pounds sterling of foreign investment has been put into companies, in North East England. The area has been the recipient of several regional grants valued at 352.2 million pounds sterling, between 1986-1996. Technological advances in traditional industries has left the area with a number of unemployed workers which helps to make the region attractive to new companies, such as Samsung. The level of unemployment, at the start of 1998, was around 11%. Wellstream plans to build a 2 million pounds sterling headquarters on the same site as its 35 million pounds sterling factory.

Greater London, England, is undergoing several major development projects, with the planned refurbishment of Wembley Stadium at 210 million pounds sterling and the possible redevelopment of Battersea Power Station. The Docklands area is becoming more popular with businesses, with the near completion of the 3 billion pounds sterling Jubilee Line extension. London has become very a important location for headquarters of major European companies. The 750 million pounds sterling Millennium dome is being built. Some 10.1% of workers in London were unemployed, in Jan 1997.

Yorkshire and Humberside
Article Abstract:
The economy of Yorkshire and Humberside, England, rose by 1.4% in 1997. The region has 8.6% of the total population for the UK. Yorkshire is becoming a popular area for the siting of call centres and for financial sector businesses. There are three airports in the region. Saint-Gobain is considering building a 62 million pounds sterling glass works in the area. Some 24% of the region's workers are employed in manufacturing whilst 44% work in the service sector. Many of the traditional heavy industries have now disappeared from the region.
