Openness pays off

Article Abstract:

Research into the finances of 100 surveying companies in the UK was formated into league tables which formed part of The EG 100 study published by the Estates Gazette. Some observers have criticised the research as being incomplete due to the absence of figures relating to the profits made by the companies featured in the study. The study found that many surveyors had difficulty in obtaining fees for advice given to clients. The introduction of a league table for surveyors has shown that companies in the industry are developing a new openness in business dealings and financial matters.

RICS gets tough

Article Abstract:

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) plan to introduce self-regulation procedures for its 90,000 members. Chartered surveyors will be obliged to develop complaints systems within their companies. There will also be an independent arbitration service. Some consumer representatives have voiced their approval of the scheme but suggest self-regulatory measures may not be a satisfactory way of dealing with all complaints. The RICS have also introduced disciplinary boards which can inflict heavy financial penalties on offenders.
