Article Abstract:

Food retailers, forced to cut costs and reduce margins because of competitive pressures, are reevaluating their distribution needs and strategies. Supermarket chain Asda has changed its distribution strategy and its regional distribution centres are being specialised to hold certain types of goods, such as ambient and chilled foods. Additionally, the increasing use of electronic point of sale and electronic data interchange has also influenced distribution requirements, with a shift from storage to cross-docking.

Facing the final battle

Article Abstract:

The towns of Weymouth and Dorchester have a considerable number of sites which have been left vacant as defence forces have left the area. Industrial companies have shown very little interest in redeveloping these sites, but there is potential to use them for residential redevelopment. Efforts are now being made to attract any economically viable development, as new jobs are urgently required.
