Article Abstract:

Property Developer Carol Ainscow's various projects were worth 5.6 million pounds sterling in 1996. Ainscow employs 300 workers in her three companies; Manto Group, Artisan Holdings and Retro Future. Her latest project is to refurbish the P&O building in Manchester, England, into a leisure, retail and residential development at a cost of 10 million pounds sterling. Ainscow claims she has not experienced an particular difficulties by being a woman in a male dominated working environment. Ainscow also has an interest in music production and art.

Open heart surgery

Article Abstract:

The bombing of the centre of Manchester, England, by the IRA in Jun 1996 caused extensive damage. However, this has also brought valuable opportunities to completely rebuild a large area of the city. There is strong determination to create a vibrant, attractive heart for Manchester, and this regeneration project will serve as a model for many others. New development is mainly focusing on retail property, with The Shambles, previously a secondary pitch, now being targeted as a new primary location.

The Mancunian candidates

Article Abstract:

Plans for the redevelopment of up to 23.8 ha of the centre of Manchester, England, are now progressing rapidly. Five schemes drawn up by teams of architects and planners have been shortlisted as a result of the International Urban Design competition, with the winning scheme to be announced shortly. The redevelopment will present a unique opportunity to create cohesion between leisure, retail, business and residential use. Steps will also be taken to emphasise the medieval heart of the old city.
