Shephard turns sheepish

Article Abstract:

Gillian Shephard has been appointed as the shadow secretary for the environment, transport and the regions but she is inexperienced in environment issues and she will have to rely heavily on Tim Yeo who is the Tory planning spokesperson. Shephard will have to oppose John Prescott of the Labour party and she has already criticised him for allowing houses to be built on green-belt space in Newcastle and Herefordshire. Shephard's task is difficult because the Labour party is merely continuing with strategies introduced by her own party when they were in power.

The City's champion

Article Abstract:

It is now very unlikely that a future Labour government in the UK would abolish the City of London Corp, according to Michael Cassidy, who is to step down as chairman of its policy and resources committee at the end of 1996. He has fought many campaigns on behalf of the City of London Corp, but ensuring that it survives a Labour government has been the most difficult. He has enjoyed dealing with very sensitive situations, but denies that he plays any role in party politics.
