Slum city

Article Abstract:

Some local planning agencies are allowing developers too much freedom to crowd houses together, without sufficient amenities, in the drive to provide extra housing. Houses built on inappropriate sites and that are also densely packed are likely to become the run down areas of the future. Positioning houses near places of work is due to the planning authorities desire to prevent development on greenfield sites, rather than give people a better quality of life. The use of greenfield sites for housing is justifiable. Regenerating contaminated land for housing is not always a popular action.

Nowhere to go

Article Abstract:

There is a growing shortage of land for development in Oxfordshire, England, and this may eventually force the county council to consider making green belt land available. At present, the draft structure plan for the county envisages that most of the 35,500 new homes that the county requires to be constructed by 2011 will be located in existing towns, mainly Banbury, Witney, Bicester and Didcot. Some observers believe that it will not be necessary to use much green belt land, as it will be possible to build a proportion of the new homes on brownfield land.

Buyers set to benefit as builders raise incentives

Article Abstract:

UK builders are offering discounts to boost sales in the housing market. The UK government is reluctant to aid the industry, and discounts are being advertised, rather than only available to those who sought them, as occurred previously. Part exchange for the buyer's property, low interest loans and carpets, kitchens and curtains supplied free are among incentives offered by Barratt. Wimpey Homes also offers incentives such as part exchange and low interest loans.
