South of the NAFTA border

Article Abstract:

Free trade proponents are proposing to add Latin America to the free trade treaty hoping to emulate the success of the North American Free Trade Agreement. In forming the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas, Latin American and Caribbean countries will be included in the trade agreement. Analysts estimate that the economies of these countries will grow by 4.5% for 1997. Reports indicate that the US is trading strongly with these countries, forming a trade surplus of $7.5 bil in 1995 with 35 of the 43 countries and territories in the region. A number of firms have pre-empted the agreement, establishing facilities in Central or South America to better position themselves in the market as the agreement is finalized.

NAFTA two years 'afta' - is it boom time yet?

Article Abstract:

A Dec. 1995 survey of executives in the US, Canada and Mexico showed that the majority of companies that engage in international trade claim that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has improved their business. Some 78% of the respondents also believe that more growth will be forthcoming as more tariff reductions are enacted as opposed to only 9% who feel that free trade is causing them difficulties. Meanwhile, development officials feel more positive about NAFTA's long-term effects. Many believe that NAFTA offers diverse opportunities for growth in foreign investments in the US.
