Many landlords and property owners remain unaware of their responsibilities under the 1992 Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. In other cases, there have been considerable problems in meeting the conditions set down in the regulations. Breaches in the law can now lead to the property owner, the managing agent and the property management staff being held jointly liable.

There is expected to be a long period of prosperity for world farming and forestry according to Under-Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services with the US Department of Agriculture and the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Franz Fischler. Food, fibre and energy demand will rise and the current harvest will take the pressure off food markets.

Farmers stay on despite hardships

Most UK farmers expect to remain in farming despite the challenges of the profession, according to the Focus on Farming Survey 2001 undertaken by Lloyds TSB Agriculture. Farmers face many pressures, including administration, very long working hours and the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
