The Basque 'ecoindustry': a certain winner

Article Abstract:

The Basque government is focusing on using its environmental industry to guide economic growth. Basque's extensive pollution problem caused by its iron and steel, chemical and paper industries opens opportunities for companies to apply their environmental technologies. These companies will receive both financial and technological assistance from the government. The Basque has five research laboratories that specialize in environmental matters and has strong ties with companies and educational institutions.

1995 investment incentives in the Basque Country

Article Abstract:

Companies which are interested in investing in the Basque Country can enter the Garapen program, an economic program of the Basque government and the Diputaciones Forales of provincial councils. The program grants companies the right to acquire land, buildings necessary to the project, capital goods and to hire services. It also provides subsidies to productive investments, a tax credit of 20% of investments and lower prices for developed industrial sites, training and research grants and venture capital.

Machine maker for the world

Article Abstract:

The Basque's iron industry has given rise to another profitable sector, the machine tool industry, which ranks 11th in the world in quality and productivity. This industry has also enhanced Basque's international trading relations with Germany, France, Portugal, Argentina and the US, which are its major customers for machine tools. It has also contributed to the country's economic growth by posting an 18% increase in industry revenues and 14% increase in export revenues in 1994 over the previous year.
