The magistrates' court

Article Abstract:

There are two sorts of magistrates in the UK courts, stipendiary magistrates who have legal training and work full time as paid magistrates and Justices of the Peace who are lay magistrates who have undertaken special training for the job. They are unpaid and attend court on a part time basis. The magistrates court deals with both criminal and civil law. The magistrates can deal with pre-trial proceedings, summary and either way offences. Regarding civil law they deal with a variety of work, such as licensing applications, family proceedings, food safety and town planning cases.

How county courts work

Article Abstract:

County courts in England and Wales can hear cases which include claims for no more than 25,000 pounds sterling. They undertake an arbitration service for smaller claims of less than 3,000 pounds sterling and are specialists in family, consumer credit and landlord and tenant laws. Arbitration awards can only be set aside in a few situations and litigants cannot appeal to other courts once a decision has been made. The county court arbitration service is well used but some observers point out the administration of the service is poorly managed and funding is limited.
