Twilight zones

Article Abstract:

Some observers point out Enterprise Zones had to offer more than cheaper costs and an available workforce because they had to continue to exist once their time period had expired. Enterprise Zones encouraged investors to invest in areas they would have ignored. Firms were excluded from having to pay business rates and were given 100% capital allowances for moving into an Enterprise Zone. They are due to stop operation in 2006. Investment in Enterprise zones has risen to 184 million pounds sterling in 1997-98, from 139 million pounds sterling in 1996-97.

Regional policy boost to rail freight development

Article Abstract:

Some property experts are concerned regional policy for the East Midlands, England, may stop development in areas near disused rail tracks although they are not suitable for rail freight. The Regional Planning Guidance for East Midlands calls for land to be set aside for rail freight links. Other observers point out railways also require good road links therefore both road and rail improvements need to be considered. A number of retail distributors are looking at using the railways to transport their goods.

A ready cure for queues

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom public transport use should have increased significantly in when the fuel crisis occurred in September 2000, but use of cars has remained the same. Innovative methods such as Croydon's Tramlink need to be more appealing if south-east England's traffic problems are to be solved.
