Wrap up a good buy

Article Abstract:

There are many factors to take into consideration when purchasing a computer system for property management work. It is first important to ensure that any computer system under consideration will undertake the functions and procedures associated with property management. Consideration must be given to the costs of selecting, acquiring, installing and running a computer system, and purchasers should be aware that data input represents a particularly significant hidden cost. There are a number of sources of information on property management systems, including the PCS Property Software Directory.

A suitable role model

Article Abstract:

Staffordshire County Council, England, chose the integrated geographic information system, developed by Laser-Scan of Cambridge, because it can cope with a large amount of data and it allows a number of users to access the system. The geospatial data management system gives users the ability to access Ordnance Survey data and maps for the county. The object-orientated database includes abstraction of data, encapsulation and polymorphism. The property and estates division of the county looks after some 1,200 buildings spread over 700 different sites.

Freedom to speak

Article Abstract:

The introduction of voice recognition software packages is expected to increase the amount of personal work carried out by employees, reducing the need for dedicated typists. The IBM ViaVoice 98 voice recognition system provides users with up to 56,000 standard words, with the option of adding further 64,000 words. All voice recognition systems work by breaking words into syllables and phonemes which can be built up using known patterns.
