A note on ASEAN as a possible model for post-apartheid SADC
Article Abstract:
The strategies adopted by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for resolving disputes, and increasing trade and investment can guide policy makers of the South Africa Development Council (SADC). The ASEAN Free Trade Area and the Common Effective Preferential Tariff Scheme encourage trade. The ASEAN Industrial Joint Ventures and ASEAN Industrial Complementation promote foreign investment. The incorporation of ASEAN's dispute settlement framework can help to resolve internal and global disputes. However, policy-makers need to recognize the differences between ASEAN and SADC member nations.

Convergent and divergent ideals in the SADC region
Article Abstract:
The extent to which the elements of nationalism, regionalism and economic development objectives have promoted or hampered the objectives of the Southern African Development Community, which is considered Africa's most successful regional program, are evaluated. An analysis of the three elements taken together and the point at which these elements diverge and converge might shed light on the manner in which economic development has been advanced in Africa.

Challenges of asymmetry associated with ASEAN's evolution to a larger-sized group
Article Abstract:
The evolution of ASEAN into a larger, asymmetrical group may be feasible provided the economic and political gains earned via admittance of a new member far exceed the costs and that these gains be distributed among the old and new members. The timing and conditions of entry, which were duly considered by ASEAN's new entrants such as Laos, Cambodia and Burma, are likewise imperative to a successful push toward full regionalism.
