A tele-collaborative course on French-American intercultural collaboration
Article Abstract:
French-American intercultural communication has been taught using telecommunications technology to pair university-level classes in France and the US. Teleconferencing, electronic mail and web pages were used to promote cross-cultural awareness. The classes focused on the two cultures' childhood socialization practices, including study of children's literature and Hollywood remakes of French films, 'Neuf Mois'/'Nine Months' and 'Trois Hommes et un couffin'/'Three Men and a Baby.' The teaching method promotes an intercultural stance.

Metalinguistic competence of beginning French students
Article Abstract:
Foreign language textbooks frequently use grammatical terms that are not well understood by students. A survey of beginning French students found that the number who could identify parts of speech in English ranged from 77% for adverbs to 19% for conjugated verbs. Either teachers need to provide instruction in grammatical analysis or an alternative to the grammar-driven approach should be sought.
