Afghanistan in 1996: year of the Taliban
Article Abstract:
The year 1996 marked renewed international and regional intercession in Afghanistan's civil war. This was brought about largely by the Taliban's successes which enabled them to capture 3/4 of Afghanistan's territory. The development alarmed Russia and some states belonging to the Commonwealth of Independent States. Meanwhile, Norbert Holl succeeded Mahmoud Mistiri as UN special representative and immediately called for the revival of peace efforts in Afghanistan. The death of Sardar Da'ud, the man who toppled Zahir Shah's government in 1973, may also be an indication of upcoming changes.

Afghanistan in 1994: civil war and disintegration
Article Abstract:
Afghanistan's civil war showed no signs of abating as hostilities between power groups led by Burhanuddin Rabbani and Gullbuddin Hekmatyar escalated in 1994. Fighting in Kabul was limited to these two groups as four other groups chose not to join the battle for the capital during the year. Several proposals to end the war were made in 1994, with the UN intensifying its efforts to broker a peaceful settlement to the conflict. Kabul residents and refugees were the hardest hit by the conflict.
