Attitudes toward democracy among Bangkok and rural northern Thais: the great divide
Article Abstract:
A survey conducted in Bangkok and some rural areas of northern Thailand show that the political attitude in Bangkok tend to be more democratic than the rural north. The rural northerners supported a military based democracy, with the army in power. While the respondents at Bangkok wanted freedom of press, the rural respondents felt that freedom of press should be restricted and the local governments should be weak. The main difference resulted from lack of urbanization in northern Thailand. Urbanization was found to impel democratic attitudes.

Response to dams and displacement in two Indian states
Article Abstract:
The construction of dams in India has caused massive public displacement. It may have generated employment, built power supply and increased the agricultural productivity with improved irrigations in the country, but the effects of the development projects remain heavy on the ousted inhabitants. In Punjab and Gujarat, displaced families suffer from tribal and kinship disturbances. Rehabilitation has been traumatic for them because they had to adopt new socio-economic patterns that are completely different from their ancestral lifestyles.
