China in 1994: marking time, making money
Article Abstract:
Successors to China's revolutionary generation strengthened their foothold on the nation's politics in 1994, as Deng Xiaoping's health continued to decline. The new 'Shanghai Gang' took key steps to ensure their dominance in the political scene, such as the alleged firing of the Heilongjiang Party Secretary Sun Weiben during Executive Vice Premier Zhu Rongji's trip to the Northeast in April and the accession of Shanghai mayor Huang Ju to the Politburo in September. In terms of the economy, several serious problems remain such as inflation and unbridled money supply growth, but economic progress continues.

The limits on leadership in China
Article Abstract:
Political succession in China is less significant than the continuance of established political convictions held by Communist Party members in the country. Stated another way, Deng Xiaoping's future successor is less likely to introduce radical changes in the Chinese political system or defy the prevailing political norms. In essence, although economic reforms may be in the offing, the gradual shift to democratization may take longer than expected. Economic advancement in China takes precedence over political reforms.

Leadership transition, intra-party democracy, and institution building in China
Article Abstract:
Intra-party democracy is conducted within the framework of one-party rule and guided by the predetermined principle of democratic centralism. China's progress and difficulties in institution building are examined from the perspective of path dependency by using leadership transition and the development of intra-party democracy as two cases for study.
