Colonial gifts: Family politics and the exchange of goods in British India, c. 1780-1820
Article Abstract:
Gifting played an important role in the Anglo-Indian society in Romantic era as it served in uniting families across the oceans and continents and also, helped in creating liens of political favors between the patrons and their clients within the British community. The gift-giving and market-orientated consumer behaviors detailed occupied shifting positions within a fluid register of exchange in Anglo-India, rather than representing alternative, distinctively 'pre-modern' and modern' mechanisms for the circulation of honor, obligations and goods.

'Business culture' and entrepreneurship in British India, 1860-1950
Article Abstract:
The differences in business culture between British expatriate firms, which declined after the early 1900s, and Indian enterprises, which proved to be more innovative, are discussed. The business values of some British managing agency houses are compared to those of J.N. Tata, an Indian magnate in textiles and heavy industry.

Materialism, mutiny and modernization in British India
Article Abstract:
British attempts to culturally and economically reshape India were rendered irrelevant by unrestrained materialism and imbalanced development. British policy educated only a few Indians while most followed traditions established for many centuries.
