Folklorist Daniel J. Crowley died on Feb 24, 1998, while documenting Carnival's international aspects. He began his research with African-derived Carnivals and studied manifestations in Nordic countries, the Caribbean, England, North America, and Bolivia.

Masking gender: a German Carnival custom in its social context

Article Abstract:

The German Carnival of "Maschkele," or "little masked one," can be seen as a significant comment on sex roles. Women often assume masculine personas in this 3-day festival, temporarily asserting that their social space should intrude on that of the men.
