Dating Hemingway's early style/parsing Gertrude Stein's modernism
Article Abstract:
A comparison of 'Three Stories & Ten Poems' by Ernest Hemingway and 'Three Lives' by Gertrude Stein shows that the narrative style used by Hemingway has been significantly influenced by the style of Stein. The syntax and diction of Hemingway's paragraphs are similar to Stein's. Critics since 1970 have emphasized the influence of Russian authors and modernists such as James Joyce and T.S. Eliot while discounting Stein's influence by claiming Hemingway was the better writer. However, early critics recognized Stein's influence on the writings of Hemingway between 1921 to 1924.

'Social gravity' and the translatio tradition in early American theories of empire
Article Abstract:
Thomas Pownall, a writer, statesman and a historian, was deeply concerned regarding the relationship between Britain and the colonies and sought to apply a vision of natural society and pay close attention to the role of commerce. He applied the Newtonian concept of gravity to his theory of empire and also adopted the then-current revival of the notion of a translatio imperii, which is a belief that the seat of world empire has always migrated from east to west.

'Modernity' and 'tradition' in Thailand
Article Abstract:
The terms 'tradition' and 'modernity' have become prescriptive rather than descriptive when they are used for third world nations. Using the example of Thailand, it is possible to see change in the term 'tradition' as it is opposed to 'modernity.' The words are also used to legitimize the political situation and the views of various political factions.
