Enlarging life through miniatures: Bill Austin's roadside carnival
Article Abstract:
Bill Austin and his wife, Martha, have been making and selling miniature carnival rides at their home in rural Wisconsin in the 11 years since he reluctantly retired from a 57-year-career as a carnival electrician and ride boss. The Austins' elaborate and beautiful miniatures exemplify how people use physical materials to remake their lives. More specifically, the miniatures express Bill Austin's love for the job he never wanted to leave and refusal to accept that retirement must mean disassociation from society.

Carnival in Bolivia: devils dancing for the Virgin
Article Abstract:
The 'Diablada' dancers in the Carnival of Oruro, Bolivia, dedicate their performance to the Virgin of the Mineshaft, a supposed sighting of the Virgin Mary in 1789. This demonstrates the indigenous population's concern with separating their Western Christianity from the traditional figure of Supay, a spirit who guards mineral riches.

J'Ouvert in Brooklyn Carnival: Revitalizing steel pan and ole mas traditions
Article Abstract:
The pre-dawn J'Ouvert West Indian celebration demonstrates the African influence on the phenomenon of the Brooklyn Carnival. Steel percussion bands, satirical singing, and exaggerated costuming began as part of Trinidad's pre-Lent celebration since the late 19th century, and continue to be part of North American recreations.
