Girard's 'little spook.' (Theodore Hicks, who integrated Philadelphia's Girard College)

On Sep 11, 1968, ten-year-old Ted Hicks became the first African American to attend Philadelphia's Girard College, a private school for fatherless boys in Philadelphia, PA. Hicks, now a political consultant and civil rights activist based in Washington, DC, recalls the racism he confronted at Girard.

The Nazi from Philadelphia

Schiffer, a retired baker, was an armed guard in a German concentration camp during World War II. He was born in Philadelphia but taken to Romania as a child by his parents, where he was drafted into the German army. He later returned to the US and now may lose his home and be deported.
