How dangerous can the Peony be? Textual space, Caizi Mudan ting, and naturalizing the erotic
Article Abstract:
An analysis of Caizi Mudan ting, an unconventional edition and rereading of the Tang Xianzu' Peony Pavilion, is presented. Caizi, which is aimed for female readership and banned for its erotic contents, shows how people in eighteenth-century China viewed sexual desire in light of Neo-Confucian moral orthodoxy. Eroticism underlies the commentaries in the work, and it is suggested that the work should be read as strong reaction against the resurgent moralistic teachings of Neo-Confucian orthodoxy in the early Qing.
