Industrial restructuring in the NIEs: prospects and challenges
Article Abstract:
Increasing labor costs has become one of the most dominant features of Asia's newly industrializing economies (NIEs). In response to such phenomenal rise in labor expenditures which is mainly due to tighter labor markets, currency appreciation and a revival of labor unions, NIEs have opted for industrial restructuring. However, the strategy has proven to be disadvantageous to female and older workers. Moreover, restructuring has resulted in wider disparity between the educated and the less educated workers. At present, NIEs are bent on resolving these complexities that restructuring brings.

Surplus rural laborers and internal migration in China; current status and future prospects
Article Abstract:
Continued increase among surplus rural laborers and massive internal migration is creating problems for the Chinese government. Misplaced by ongoing socio-economic changes, migrants threaten to destroy the established social order. Experts consider migration a by-product of the liberal policies being adapted by China. Although surplus laborers play a major part in economic development, government's worry is not without any basis, since most of the urban centers are ill-equipped to handle such massive changes.
