Inscriptions of silence and violence in the Antillean text: reading Warner-Vieyra'a 'Juletane' and 'Sidonie.' (Myriam Warner-Vieyra)
Article Abstract:
The protagonists in Myriam Warner-Vieyra's 'Juletane' and 'Sidonie' are extrinsic, female figures who must remake themselves after geographical displacement. Denied empowerment through speech, they articulate their silence through writing. The act of writing gives both women a way to assert control and authority in their lives. Unfortunately, giving written voice to their anger does not resolve their feelings. Sidonie goes back to silence after her husband's unfaithfulness is revealed. Their anger leads both women to violence. For Warner-Vieyra, violence is not an answer to silence but a possible way of dealing with repression.

'Les Peregrinations d'une paria': initiation, observation, revelation
Article Abstract:
'Les Peregrinations d'une pariah' (1838) by Flora Tristan, which recounts a voyage to Peru, also reflects changes in the author's self-conception and in her view of her outsider status. These changes can be appreciated through analysis of three critical 'moments' of initiation, observation and revelation that contribute to the development of political, social and feminist awareness. Article text is in French.

Famous readers of an infamous book: the fortunes of 'Gaspard de la nuit.'
Article Abstract:
Aloysius Bertrand's anthology of prose poems 'Gaspard de la Nuit' influenced many French authors from Charles Baudelaire to Andre Breton. Interest by surrealists like Breton in Bertrand's work is due to its themes of dreams and the fantastic. Stephane Mallarme was partly responsible for a revival of interest in Bertrand after Baudelaire's death. Further research on Bertrand is needed.
